The 3000$ BLT Sushi Log

A buddy of mine posted about an adventure he had recently in his facebook notes. It was so hilarious I had to share.

"So for a while I have been devising a recipe for bacon wrapped, BLT filled tempura sushi, and let me tell you, what I have come up with is amazing. So Sunday, the night before Halloween, we sat out to cook it, and the results are documented below.

We picked up 3 packs of bacon and most of the needed ingredients, and prepaid them, rice on the stove, tempura batter in the bowl, and a huge, woven square of bacon on the griddle, while this is happening bacon covered and filled apple pies are cooling by the stove and the kids are preparing to watch horror movies and carve pumpkins.

After the bacon square was about half cooked, we added a layer of rice, and a row of tomatoes and lettuce. We had also cooked bacon to lay across it but I ate it all. Now at this point I noticed we had not picked up wasabi, so devised a kinda of buffalo wing sauce cream hybrid, out of random things, which was pretty fucking good.

Phase 2: A deep slathering

After mixing a drink we added the rest of the toppings, a slathering of wing sauce and noticing the oil on the stove was scorching.

At this point I noticed how it was physically imposable to roll this damn thing, but I tried my ass off. Eventually I got it kinda tucked up like a huge burrito, and decided that next time nori would be necessary.

So after much annoyance and a lot of cussing, I got the damn thing rolled up, and then had to figure out how to batter this 2.5 lb food roll, with out loosing it all. with Becky's help, we rolled the damn thing back and forth on the foil till something kind of like an even coat was achieved and it was about ready to fry. At this point, the oil on the stove caught fire, over flowed and filled the stove top and oven with flaming oil. I'm not fucking joking.

The smoke alarm went off, the neighbors freaked out, and the whole apartment complex (located on 92nd and Powell) had to be evacuated. At first the fire was contained, I mean it sucked but we had it covered, until the Mexican next door ran in to help. While holding a bottle of Corona, he looked at the fire, screamed something in Spanish, SHOOK THE BOTTLE AND BLASTED THE OIL FIRE WITH IT. This caused flaming oil to spread all over the place, the walls, counter top, everything. The flames wound up consuming most of the kitchen with in minutes

Guess who!

See that glowing door? That one in the middle, that's who all the other people in the apartment complex hate. That's who woke them all up, sent them out in to the parking lot at some god awful time, and for ever has them worried that one day, a tv dinner is going to turn in to Chernobyl. EVERY TIME we light a cigarette, they shiver. Did I mention our kids where there? My son and daughter as well as her boys had actually been the reason for this, we where GOING to make bacon themed dinner items and carve pumpkins. THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED.

I'm not saying any of this is funny. in fact, it fucking sucks. A LOT. Aside from all the planes we had for the night, all the fear, chaos, smoke, damage, and trauma, we lost 3 packs of bacon. THREE PACKS OF BACON. After the smoke cleared and most people returned to there homes (other then the 7 or 8 who stayed out side to glare at us) we went back inside...
So this is just the kitchen, there's much more damage, but this should give a good example. So aside from looking like a location out of fall out, ash falling every where, water dripping from the ceiling, everything melted and the place my gf just moved in to last month going up in flames, it was pretty romantic.


Slightly different then planned

The rest of the night was spent trying to sift thru the ruins of the kitchen and assess the damages and loss, we noticed that the place had lit up so bright that the blinds in the other room where melted to the windows, toys in the kids room where fused to the wall and more or less, shit was fucked up. The end product was the trip to Carl's JR, where we ordered 14 spicy chickens, 6 medium fries, a steak house burger (with bacon) and some random drinks, the kids where all put to bed and me and Becky ate fast food, drank a 5th of tequila on my porch and laughed a lot in some kind of twisted, romantic way.

I was told I am the only person who could make a girl laugh as her house burned down, and though I don't think any of this is funny, nor is it over for us yet, it was pretty fucking amazing and some times laughter is the only option.

More to follow as this bs unfolds, there's a meeting with the apartment owner today who already is demanding $3000 up front to START fixing the place...let alone if they let her stay while it is fixed or at all..more details to follow. Because I'm such a nut for Halloween, I've created my own ongoing Horror movie challenge list which I will add to at my leisure. It's by no means comprehensive or a collection of good movies, just ones I enjoy watching during the season or ones I've yet to see.

-Trick r' Treat
This is one of the few I'll recommend. It's a really fun story constructed of three spooky Halloween stories. It goes right from silly, to morbid and scary from instance to instance and it always gets me in the mood for the season.
-Hocus Pocus
Nostalgia. I debated putting Halloween Town and Under Wraps on here too, and I still just might. I have such great memories of watching all three play throughout October on Disney channel as a kid how could I not include at least one?
-Evil Dead

-The Thing
I've actually never seen this movie, and since I forced my room-mate to watch Blade Runner after he told me he'd never seen that; I was forced to add this one to the list.
-Paranormal Activity 2
The first one was total dumb silliness, I wanna see if the sequel follows the trend.
-House
The "WTF"-iest movie ever apparently. Weird Japanese stuff abounds. I saw a trailer for it way back when and I've just been dying to see it since.
-Scream

-Chopping Mall

-Cabin Fever
This movie legitimately scares that crap outta me.
-Halloween

-Re-Cycle
Excellent Korean film where a writer takes a trip to the land of the discarded and finds exactly that.

Curiosity. I've seen bits and pieces on the manga on the internet.

Breaking Bad continues to astound me.

I'd just like to take a step away from all my Doctor
Who nerdiness and talk about how much I love the show Breaking Bad. Here's a clip from Sunday's episode.

Quite a bit darker then Doctor Who in some very earthly and perhaps scarier ways. Breaking Bad makes it a point to keep you guessing with every episode. It also explores the story of most of it's characters, forcing you to understand each one's motivation and drive within the story. Really fascinating stuff.

Seasons one through three are now one Netflix and Season four is currently airing. If you don't already watch it I highly recommend you give it a look. It's heavy but it's worth it.

Being the stupid obsessive fanboy that I am I've been scouring the internet for every last bit of info on the Doctor Who series six finale that I can and I've found some reviews and some hints from some lucky folks who've been given a chance to preview the episode before it airs. Here's a list of tiny spoilers (If you can even call them that) of "The Wedding of River Song" for the rabidly curious.

-There is technobabble, but that’s largely a red herring

-The teaser looks like it was more expensive than the rest of the “back six” put together. It’s a visual and conceptual delight

-It does answer a lot of questions, but some old ones (from Matt Smith’s first series) are still left open, and some new ones are posed

-There are many, many glorious special effects sequences

-The denouement is bound to cause some debate. If you like the episode, you’ll be able to rationalise it, but if you don’t you’ll be going, “But hang on, in that episode…?” But that’s Doctor Who fandom

-You’ll discover a whole new meaning to the phrase “Live Chess” that has nothing to do with Harry Potter

-The Doctor wonders if he could be the fifth member of something

-Wi-fi comes in handy

-There’s the return of an old look for the Doctor

-There are some unexpected (truly unexpected) returning characters

-There’s a moving tribute to an old friend

-The Doctor offers and eye for an eye patch

-A big revelation may remind you of Little Britain

-There are some peculiar postmen

-Somebody’s portrait looks nothing like them

-The episode title may not be as much of a red herring as you might think. But then again…

-Bow ties are not just cool, they’re useful on occasion

-It’s a bit of a gamechanger

-The eye patch is explained

-I can guarantee that some people will go, “Oh I guessed that all along,” at one point, but considering millions of fans on thousands of websites have been discussing every possible outcome, it’s not surprising that some people will have come across it. I’m happy to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe I’m thick

-It’s not faultless – I have quibbles – but it’s ambitious, and clever, and unique, and surprising, and funny, and visually stunning, it’s emotionally engaging and it’s unlike anything else on TV. And I can’t wait to see it again

Between the celebrated return of the now STARZ/BBC series Torchwood and the release of his greatest hits album Tonight's the Night: The Best of John Barrowman, Captain Jack Harkness sure seems to have his hands full but that doesn't mean he isn't looking towards the future! According to the Entertainment Reporter Barrowman has expressed interest in reprising his role as Harkness in a possible episode in 2013 that will mark the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.
I'm freaking out over this to be quite honest. Since his introduction as the eleventh incarnation I've been ravenous about seeing Matt Smith interact with Barrowman on screen. The eleventh seems so disconnected from his previous incarnations especially with the introduction of the new companions Amy and Rory the show seems to have majorly shifted focus and almost separated itself from the Tennant years entirely. Watching Jack flirt and adventure with the eleventh would not only be hilarious and amazing but would further solidify the new Doctor with his past and give all the die hard Tennant fans something to really squeal at.
If you agree and if you're Whovian enough, send BBC a message and tell em' we want to see some Time Agent/Time Lord lovin' for the 2013 DW anniversary.
That way we can say they turned a deaf ear to the fans if it doesn't work out, right?

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd fill the void here with a little bit about myself and why I'm starting a blog.
My name is Zach Cox, I'm 21 and I live in Portland, Oregon with my two room mates Scott and Kyle.
I write and draw a "rom-com" comic called Son of Sam
S.O.S. is about a nerdy Jewish kid named Walt who feels like an outcast in the catholic school he attends and upon meeting a rebellious young girl named Avery attempts to get himself expelled as a means of leaving. In my opinion I'm getting better at drawing and scripting it as time goes on and because of that I'm only truly proud of the latest few pages.
Another reason I'm starting a blog here is that I might be writing a weekly Doctor Who/Matt Smith fan article for my lovely and talented coworker Andrew Klaus over at diggingtochina pretty soon.

To find out more about that consult him on digging to china or just keep checking in there.
As far as what you can expect from my personal blog here in the future I couldn't tell you. I'm sure it'll be mostly a funny content dump/online art file for me. If you have any questions or just want to introduce yourself too go right ahead.
